If what I remember reading about Google's algorithms is correct, content near the top of the page, especially the first link or few links, are deemed most important. With a table-based layout, your links on a sidebar may be deep within your page, maybe even after third-party advertising. With a grid-based layout, your links to other pages in your website, as well as links to important info on the current page, can be placed at the top of the HTML, making it great for tiny-screened hand-helds as well. You can to a certain extent do this with CSS now, but grid-layout would be so much easier.
It will be great when this CSS approach is adopted by browsers other than MSIE. |
