The script goes through the motions of recording (after I click to allow it to use the microphone), but when I play back, there is nothing.

Downloading a WAV file also gives me no sound.

Are you speaking through the microphone and are you sure that the voice of the microphone is correctly reaching the browser ?

You may have to change the settings of the browser or your system to set the default input device. If it's set to a wrong device, the demo won't work.

Also, which browser are you using ? Check the browser console for errors too.
